In this quarter, I've learned about persuasive techniques in speeches, editorials, and articles such as rhetorical questions, logical appeals, emotional appeals, loaded words, and counterarguments. We read and analyzed articles and editorials about privacy invasion, Saddam Hussein and his sons, and Donald Trump. We also Obama's gun control reinstatement and found it very persuasive as he's very proficient at writing: He skillfully used various persuasive techniques but still managed to keep it simple so that everyone could understand the points he made. I was especially impressed by his uses of loaded words, subtle sarcasm, logical appeals, juxtaposition, and anecdotes. (These, specifically, are techniques which could persuade me the most because I prefer hearing or reading facts or real experiences—rather than just opinions—and make my own judgements.) A great example of Obama's use of contrasting specific events is when he compares the San Bernardino attack (Dec. 2015) to a knife attack in China which happened during the same time. This example clearly shows how much more damages guns could cause and have caused.
Some other things we did were blogs. So far, I've created blogs about privacy invasion and my 20 Time project, which is about raising money to fund for Dream of a Future's families' scholarships (for their children's education).
Strength and Weakness:
In this quarter, I've completed a Mid-of-Year writing assignment and received a much better score (surprisingly, because I was never good at timed writing), compared to the one at the beginning of the year. My scores show that my writing skills have improved a lot, and I've particularly developed strengths in style & fluency, as well as content. Although the scores in all of the criteria of my writing assignment are high, I still noticed weaknesses, which are the organization of my written pieces and language usage. To solve this problem, I will try to find the time to read more (like I did last year), to discover different writing styles and get used to proper and varied language usage.
